Product Questions

What is the Perm value of this foam at 2"?
Question by: ANASTASIA on Dec 12, 2022, 12:02 PM
The perm rating is less than 1 per 2" based on closed cell content with skin on and when bound to natural porous substrate.
Answer by: Customer Service on Dec 12, 2022, 12:14 PM
I want to fill a volume below a refrigerator box. What is the max thickness recommended with your Seal Spray High Performance Closed Cell Insulating Foam Can
Question by: Brian Penrod on Jan 20, 2023, 9:39 AM
There is no maximum thickness that is recommended for this product. This product can be sprayed as thick as you wish but is designed to be sprayed in layers, each layer not exceeding .5". In order to achieve maximum results the foam should be allowed to cure before spraying additional layers. Spraying foam too thick in too little time will result in less yield.
Answer by: Customer Service on Jan 20, 2023, 3:36 PM
So, is the R-value 4.37 @ 1” thick? Can it be used to insulate ductworks located in the attic that can probably reach over 120F? Because it says max service temp is 87F, does that mean if the temperature is over that rated temperature the foam is useless at insulating?
Question by: Mr.roboto on Mar 1, 2024, 6:39 AM
The max service temperature listed is for the application process only and does not reflect the properties of the foam once cured.

This stuff is great once you get the groove of applying it. Very easy to apply on walls but a little more difficult on ceilings and angles. Definitely watch the video. Customer service was 5 star.

  2. Excellent new foam option with LOTS of use cases

This type of foam has been available in overseas markets for a while, I was thrilled to see it finally available in the US.

Although they are different, it would be best to compare this to the 2-tank spray foam kits than to the rest of the "can" foams out there, because the defining feature is the projecting fan-pattern spray, as opposed to the "bead" of all other can foams. This is a must if you are trying to cover the surface of something with an inch or two or more of foam.

It _doesn't_ replace the 2-tank kits. For larger projects, they are still the right choice. But there are MANY smaller projects that might not be worth using a kit where this would be ideal. (Also, the smallest two-tank kits don't have fan tips anyway, so they are better for gaps and cracks than covering the surface of something.)

They sell this up to a roughly 600-board feet kit (24 cans) and I would probably go that far with it. More than that, and I'd likely get a couple tank kits. But where it REALLY excels is smaller projects where you might only need a couple 2 or 3 cans. The tank kits are a horrible choice for that, and this is a perfect choice.

    My takeaways:

    1) The foam from 2-tank kits is much more rigid when cured. This 1-component foam is basically the same as all other 1-component foam once cured. It is very firm, but does have a little bit of a rubbery "give" to it if you push on it. Not as much as most "Window and Door" versions of foam, more similar to most brands "general purpose" version. This isn't a bad thing, it is just a difference. But the rigidity of 2-tank foam is often touted for how much it stiffens up a wall. Just don't expect the same degree of rigidity from this 1-component foam.

    2) Like all 1-component spray foams, this cures from moisture/humidity in the air. It will expand more and cure faster if you _very_ lightly mist it with water. This is totally not necessary (unless you are in a super dry area) but is a common property of all 1-component foams.

    3) Because it is a moisture cure, it is not "fast" like the chemical cure 2-tank kits. If you've ever used Great Stuff (or comparable) you know exactly what to expect time-wise. I personally wouldn't aim for a thickness of more than 1-1.5 inches in a single pass, or it might start falling off. And you need to give it significant time to cure before you lay down a second layer. I would give it BARE MINIMUM an hour. Because the second layer will cut off air/humidity to the first layer, you want it to be done before you cover it or the first layer may not finish curing properly. Claims of "minutes to cure and recoat" are confusing this type of foam with 2-tank chemical-cure kit foam. You will ruin your foam if you try and re-spray it within 5 or 10 minutes.

    4) This slower cure can actually be a benefit in many cases and I am looking forward to using it to my advantage. You can spray it, and then replace the drywall/sheathing/whatever and just let it cure behind the surface. No need to worry about trimming off excess, because you have PLENTY of time to finish spraying, and then replace the wall covering. (Make sure there is still some airflow, and that you didn't spray SO MUCH that it would then bulge out the wall. That's easy to do with regular can foam in gaps and cracks, which is why everyone makes a softer and lower expansion "Window and Door" version, but wouldn't be as easy with this. But it is still possible if you go crazy.)

    5) The cans go FAST... But if the board-feet yield is accurate, you are buying it based on the price vs. board feet, not the number of cans it takes to get those board feet, so just be aware. (I can't speak to the board feet yield accuracy, because I've not done "scientific" enough tests to say. And there are so many factors that go into it.)

I wholeheartedly recommend this for many types of fan-spray foam projects. It is just important to recognize that it is not an exact substitute for the 2-tank kits. I would say they are pretty interchangeable in the vast majority of projects (size dependent) but not necessarily all. If you really need the rigidity of the tank foam, this won't give you that. Also, the tank foam does have a bit higher R-values. If you are going for a specific R-value, you'd need to factor in that you'll need a thicker coating of this (therefore more product) than if you used tank foam. If you're just going for "some insulation and a moisture/vapor barrier" I would say that's not an issue.

Thanks for bringing this to the US, Industrial Products!
