Description

The Vari-Safe Ladder Lockout is an anti-climb security door that keeps unauthorized people off your fixed ladders. It mounts at the base of the ladder and covers the lower rungs, so the climb simply cannot start. Built from corrosion-resistant HDPE panel and aluminum channel, it holds up outdoors, in washdown areas, and in coastal air - and because there are no hinges, springs, or moving parts, there is nothing to seize up or pinch a finger.

Every Vari-Safe Ladder Lockout is identical except for one thing: how you lock it. Pick the option that matches how your site operates.

Why sites choose a ladder lockout

  • Unauthorized climbing is a liability problem. Fixed ladders on tanks, roof access, silos, and mezzanines are an open invitation to anyone walking past - employees taking a shortcut, contractors without training, trespassers.
  • Cheaper and faster than a cage retrofit. A lockout controls access at the base without touching the ladder structure or triggering an engineering review.
  • Supports your written safety program. OSHA expects employers to control access to fixed ladders; a physical barrier makes the policy enforceable instead of aspirational.
  • Visible deterrent. A locked panel across the lower rungs makes the restriction obvious - no one can claim they did not know.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use one combination for every ladder on my site?

Yes. That is the main advantage of the combination version. The Forge Defender lock is user-resettable, so you can set every lockout you own to the same 4-digit code. One number gets your whole crew onto every ladder - no key ring, no key control log, no re-issuing keys when someone leaves.

Will it fit my ladder?

The lockout fits fixed ladders with rungs 16 in or wider. Measure the clear width between the ladder side rails before ordering. If your rungs are narrower, contact us before purchasing.

Does this replace a ladder cage or safety system?

No. A ladder lockout controls who can climb; it is not a fall protection device and does not substitute for a cage, a ladder safety system, or personal fall arrest equipment required by OSHA 1910.28.

Can I switch the lock later?

Yes. The lockout accepts any standard padlock shackle, so you can move between keyed and combination locks at any time.
